Add Page Numbers to an Existing PDF
Number every page in one of five positions, in three formats, starting from any number you choose.
About the PDF Page Number Adder
Documents assembled from several sources rarely arrive with usable pagination, and referring to something in a meeting is impossible without it. This adds numbers to a finished PDF without needing the originals. Position can be bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre or top right. Format can be a bare number, the word Page followed by the number, or the number against the total in the form 1 / 40.
The starting number is adjustable, which is what makes the tool work on real bundles. Set it to 3 if two cover sheets should not be counted, or to a higher figure if this section continues a document that ended at 88. The counter runs on from wherever you begin, and the running total shown in the 1 / 40 format follows the same offset so the arithmetic stays consistent. Font size is set in points. Numbers are drawn as text into the document, on your own machine.
Key Features
- Five placements: Bottom centre, bottom left or right, and top centre or right, covering the usual house styles.
- Three numbering formats: A plain number, a Page prefix, or the current page against the final one.
- Custom starting number: Begin at any value so cover sheets can be skipped or a continuing sequence resumed.
- Adjustable size: Font size in points from small footnote scale up to something clearly legible in a printed bundle.
- Text rather than an image: Numbers are added as real type, so they stay sharp in print and add almost nothing to the file.
How to Use the PDF Page Number Adder
- Add the assembled PDF.
- Choose where the numbers should sit and which format to use.
- Set the starting number, allowing for any pages that should not be counted.
- Set the font size, then apply and download the numbered document.
How It Works
The document is opened with pdf-lib, the standard Helvetica face is embedded, and each page receives a text string positioned from its own width and height — centred by measuring the label, or inset from the left or right edge by a fixed margin, and placed a short distance from the bottom or top. Numbers are rendered in a dark grey. Three limits are worth planning around: every page is numbered with no way to skip individual ones, so a cover sheet is best handled by choosing a start value rather than excluding it; the colour and the margin from the page edge are fixed rather than adjustable; and only arabic numerals are available, so a document needing roman numerals for its front matter would have to be numbered in separate passes and merged.
When You Need It
A company secretary assembles a board pack from a dozen contributors, each supplying a paper with its own internal numbering or none at all. Directors need to say page forty-seven and have everyone land in the same place, which requires one continuous sequence across the whole bundle. Numbering the assembled file solves it in a single step. Board papers routinely contain unannounced financial results and personnel matters, so paginating them through a public PDF service is not a risk a company secretary would take. Legal teams preparing bundles and academics numbering appendices apply pagination for the same navigational reasons.
